A Shadow on the Household: Chatham-Kent Public Library’s First Fundraising event in 2010, celebrating Black History Month

Join us on January 30th at the Cultural Centre for the Chatham-Kent Public Library’s launch for Black History Month, entitled Shadow on the Household. Through song and spoken word, international vocal sensation Denise Pelley of London, accomplished musician Tom Starks formerly of Chatham, and historians Bryan and Shannon Prince of Buxton will bring you the true story of the Weems family who fled from Slavery and oppression in the United States to the safe haven of Chatham-Kent.
With the generous support of Bryan and Shannon Prince, Chatham-Kent Public Library (CKPL) is pleased to partner with the Chatham Cultural Centre to provide an opportunity to remember, commemorate, support and explore Chatham-Kent Black History through story, music and words. Funds raised at this event will be used to provide library programming for the Chatham-Kent community. This event is the beginning venture in achieving an important goal of the Chatham-Kent Public Library Board, which is to double the number of programs offered.
Director of Library Services Kathryn Goodhue says about this unique initiative, “it is a wonderful opportunity to do what our public library does best, which is making connections within our community. It also reinforces our vision of being an institution where people and ideas meet”.
Chatham-Kent Public Library is an eleven-branch system with over 200,000 volumes in its collection including DVDs, CDs and magazines, and over 50,000 registered users. CKPL has experienced an increase in circulation in 2009 of over 5% and expects to have circulated over 820,000 items by the end of the year. Tickets for A Shadow on the Household are $20 each, and can be purchased by phone at 519-354-8338, by coming in to 75 William Street North, or by logging on to www.cktickets.com.
